The Shanghai Club (上海公会) under the Singapore Sam Kiang Huay Kwan (新加坡三江会馆) will hold a Shanghainese New Year Dinner on the evening of January 17, 2025 (Friday). Participants include guests from all walks of life and more than 200 Shanghainese from all walks of life.
The dinner will feature Shanghainese delicacies, as well as programs planned by the Sam Kiang Liyuan Society (三江梨园社), such as Yue Opera (越剧), Shanghai Opera (沪剧) excerpts, Shanghainese programs and singing performances, etc. There are also rich prizes and lucky draws waiting for you to win.
The Shanghai Club has a history of more than 100 years. It is a subordinate association of the Sam Kiang Huay Kwan. Sam Kiang people have a long history of going to Southeast Asia. " Sam Kiang " originally refers to the three provinces of Zhejiang (浙江), Jiangxi (江西) and Jiangsu (江苏). The cemetery and ancestral hall established by Sam Kiang people in the local area can be traced back to 1898.
In 1906, Sam Kiang Public Office was established, becoming the headquarters of the nine public groups of Sam Kiang Gang, including Ningpo Guild (宁波同乡会), Wenzhou Guild (温州会馆), Jiangxi Guild (江西会馆), Shanghai Club (上海公会), etc. In 1927, Sam Kiang Public Office was renamed Sam Kiang Huay Kwan, and the concept of "Big Sam Kiang (大三江)" was gradually formed.
In the early days, Sam Kiang people were also called "Shanghainese". Today, Sam Kiang Huay Kwan recruits "Big Sam Kiang " and "Little Sam Kiang" people, and Shanghai Club also welcomes new immigrants from Shanghai to join.
The Shanghai New Year Dinner has been held since 2015 and has become a tradition. Since 2017, the number of participants has exceeded 100, and then the number quickly exceeded 200.
The dinner will also provide cultural performances with Shanghai and Jiangnan (江南) characteristics, becoming a popular Spring Festival gathering activity for Sam Kiang people from the urban agglomeration centered on Shanghai and various university alumni associations.
