On December 20th of 1941 General Chennault and his brave boys of the AVG （America Volunteer Group） beat the Japanese invaders in the sky for the first time. “Flying Tigers” appeared all newspapers and in Kunming, the local Yunnan people coined a name for them, a heroic name they still worship to this day. “Flying Tigers” will be last of history friendship between American and China for ever,

《翠堤长虹》彰显民族精神（中文）
70年前，为了抗战胜利，祖国边疆的各族人民群众做出了巨大的贡献，他们流血流汗，用原始简单的工具，肩扛手刨，在最短的时间修筑了滇缅公路，创造了世界筑路史的奇迹；修建了几十个大型机场，使驼峰航线的能顺利开辟，保证了国际援华物质源源不断运抵中国。
2005年5月 当昆明的社会各界音乐爱好者们得知《翠堤长虹—飞虎/驼峰的故事》将要为60年前一批曾经帮助过中国抗日战争的老飞虎队员和老驼峰飞行员演出，再现这一中美历史友谊，大家踊跃报名，积极参加，经过三次考试，最终选出了120名合唱团员参加演出，他们中有教师 学生 医生 护士 干部 大老板 小商人、以及来自各行各业音乐爱好者。
由于只有两个月不到的排练时间，所以只能加班加点排练，星期六星期天也不休息。并且规定了严格的纪律，不许迟到，也不许请假。为此，有的团员在医院里发着高烧输着液，一看排练时间快到，自己拔掉针头赶来排练；有的团员放弃一个个赚钱最多的周六周日参加排练；有的团员为赶来排练摔伤了腿，仍坚持排练；盛夏里带病参加排练的团员更是不计其数；有车的团员为没车的团员做起了志愿接送司机，一直坚持到整个演出活动结束；大部分团员每天深夜还在唱谱背谱。
由于是民间人士发起的排练演出活动，没有任何资金来源，所有参与这项活动的人员都是义务的，著名作曲家陈勇教授在行政领导工作和创作工作十分繁忙的情况下，谢绝别的高报酬的作曲委托，耗时五个月，义务为这部歌剧谱曲，为这部歌剧成功走上舞台托起了坚实的台柱；全部的角色演员都是义务演出。没有租排练场地的经费，大家就设了一个捐款纸盒，每次排练，团员们自愿的往纸盒里放上一元 二元 五元 十元，解决了排练场地的租金；开印刷厂的老板团员主动承担了歌谱和节目单的印刷，等等…..
两个月全团128人不惧困难、忘我辛苦的排练，诠释了普通老百姓对国家对历史的责任感。这是一种为了一件崇高的事业不计个人得失、无私无畏、敢爱敢恨、勇于奉献、敢于牺牲的精神，这就是我们中华民族的精神！在抵御外敌时，它使中华民族永远不倒。在和平年代里，它能抵御纸醉金迷、振奋人心、蓬勃向上！这是中华民族千百年来一脉相承的精神。
最终，2005年7、8月这台为歌颂那些为中国的抗日战争胜利而牺牲的飞虎/驼峰勇士的歌剧成功的再现在舞台上，并且赢定了美国飞虎队驼峰飞行员的广泛高度赞誉。

Dear Liao Qiyu,
It was such a pleasure to receive your message. I have told all of my friends about the very wonderful circumstances that led to our meeting each other. The night of the chorale presentation of your opera was the most extraordinary evening in China. It was during that performance, as I was looking at your very talented and enthusiastic students that I truly saw the importance of how we all shared the same dreams and hopes. That entire performance was done with great professionalism and empathy for the tenderness of the two young people but also told about the devastation that war brings to people. The time with your students after their performance was most precious.
We have been very busy of late. The National Aviation Hall of Fame had its annual series of enshrinement events this past weekend. That involved four days of gatherings from a very casual small airport party for the enshrinees to two formal evening programs and ending with a major aerial demonstration on Sunday. One of the people that was enshrined was retired Air Force Major General John Allison. John was in Kunming as the United States originator for air commando operations to support General Stilwell and General Chennault. He was a triple ace by shooting down over 15 Japanese airplanes. Also, involved in the ceremony was retired Air Force Brigadier General 'Tex" Hill who was one of the original Flying Tigers and also an ace. You may have heard of those two gentlemen.
……There are so many things that I fondly remember about the time I spent in Kunming. Please give my warmest regards to your students and thank them again for being such caring and interested young people. What a great evening that was!!!

“昨晚在昆明，我们参加完云南省委领导举办的大型招待晚宴之后，集体乘坐汽车前往昆明的一所艺术学院去观看了一场特殊的歌剧演出。这部歌剧不是典型的中国歌剧，而是一部极富魅力、优美感人的清唱剧。
这部清唱剧讲述的是美国空军飞虎队在昆明的一个故事。在一个可容纳300人的剧场内，一个大约由100位歌手组成的合唱团，一位指挥，一位钢琴家和几位歌唱家在演出，整个飞虎队的故事被音乐家们用声乐演唱来表现。
在舞台的旁边有一个用来显示中英文歌词的屏幕，这个屏幕帮助我们了解歌唱的内容。清唱剧的第一个部份表现的是在日本人轰炸昆明之前，昆明市民纯朴的民风和与世无争的生活方式。当他们听到日本人要来轰炸的时候，还不知道炸弹是什么东西，有人猜想它可能像一个鸡蛋大。
有人问当炸弹丢下来时，是不是可以躲到雨伞或桌子下去避一避？后来他们很快知道了什么是炸弹，因为轰炸使他们陷入悲惨的境地，歌声唱出他们的绝望和悲愤。飞虎队来了，四位穿着空军飞行员制服的男歌手走到了台上，他们歌唱的内容是反映他们来到中国昆明，与当地的人民一同抗击日本侵略者的故事。那天晚上最好的歌唱家上场了，他就是陈纳德将军的扮演者。

Your message was passed on to me and I am so glad to have your address so I can tell you how wonderful your cantata, "Green Path and Rainbow" is and how much we enjoyed the performance last September. I have written up a story of our travels on that trip and have put in information about the cantata. I will copy it here for you and also give you the link to the whole story:
On our last night in Kunming we were given another lavish banquet hosted by the head of the Communist Party in Yunnan. After the banquet we were put on the buses again to attend an opera. This was not the typical Chinese opera.
This was a special Cantata which was written, conducted, and performed in an arts college in Kunming. The opera told the story of the Flying Tigers in Kunming! It was a small theatre, seating perhaps 300 and the story of the Flying Tigers was all sung, mostly by a large choir of 100 singers, with a conductor, pianist, and several vocalists with English titles on a screen on the side of the stage. The first part of the opera dealt with what a pleasant life the simple people of Kunming had prior to the Japanese bombing. It told the story of the farmers, the families, and how simple and easy their life was. When they heard the Japanese were going to bomb them, they didn¹t know what a bomb was and thought perhaps it was like an egg.
"Should we put up an umbrella? or crawl under the table?" They soon found out what a bomb was and what it could do. They sang of the misery, the horrible destruction, and the inability to stop it. Then - along came the Flying Tigers!! Four male singers came on stage wearing pilot uniforms and they sang about coming to Kunming and the fighting against the enemy. Then out came the best singer of the evening - General Chennault! Well, it was crying time again as we all brought out tissues. What a great honor - we could hardly believe it! I found out that this opera had been performed all around the province and on television several times. Words fail me to describe how moved and humbled we all felt.

It is so good to hear from you. I have had you on my mind quite
often and wondered how things were moving with you. I am glad to hear of your successful presentation and showing. And to think it was in Kunming.
Do you know that I was stationed in Kunming and that is the field from which I did most of my flying during WWII. Kunming will always have a special place in my heart. But enough about me, I want to hear more about your wonderful performance.
Since I left China we have traveled a bit more. Last year we visited
France. It was a very moving experience to visit Normandy and the large military cemetery with all the grave markers properly aligned in neat rows as they extended across the burial ground. Yes, it reminded me of the time of war in WW II. It also reminded me that my father-law was in Normandy and a very close friend, with whom I went to high school, who also survived that day in June 1944. And it was only 4 days after D DAY that I, in China, parachuted out my airplane and eventually joined up with the 8th Route Army (Ba Lu Gin)

I attended your concert "Green Path and Rainbow" the night of 11 September 2005, along with the Flying Tigers and Hump Pilots and Doolittle Raiders who were there that memorable night.
My name is Paul Friday. My father was a pilot in China in 1944. He died after the war from injuries he received during the war, when I was a young boy. He gave up part of his young life to fight for China. I have waited 50 years for the time when I can again see my father, in a way that parallels Yang Baoqin's wait to again be with Jim Fawkes.
I came up onto the stage after the performance, and was weeping from the beauty of the performance, and was surrounded by warm support from the singers that I will never forget.
Your performance that night of Green Path and Rainbow was, I think, the best performance of any kind that I have ever seen in my life. It paralleled in part my father's life, and my life, and so had very special
meaning for me.
During our tour of China with the American war veterans on the 60th anniversary of the end of the war we took part in many special events, received great honors, and felt the warm love of the Chinese people.
But the greatest experience of this very special trip was your performance of this special musical work.
You deserve great credit for authoring and performing this work. I hope that you can perform it again – and wish that you could tour the U.S. with this performance. That would allow more of the American people to experience the warmth and love of the Chinese people, as have I.I wanted to ask if a video tape was made of your performance? If so, is it possible to obtain a copy of it? I would keep it in my library of the history of my father and of the war in China, and would value it forever.
I will be in Yunnan again next year and hope I can attend any musical performances you might have during that period. I am now your dedicated fan.
Thank you again. You should take great pride in what you have ccomplished with your great work, Green Path and Rainbow. The love that you put into this music fills my heart - and I wish that you, in turn, can feel that love reflected back from me to all of the people involved with this concert.

I must apologize for not getting back to you sooner to express our thanks for the wonderful performance for our Veterans group. We enjoyed it very much.
My only disappointment was not getting to speak to you while I was there at the theater that evening. I do remember seeing you somewhere before the opera but I was being hurried to meet a schedule and needed to rush off. I'm so sorry and I apologize. I did try to get to you at the theater to congratulate you, but when I went on stage after your performance, you had removed your gown and I could not locate you after that because of the crowd and picture taking. I kept looking around but could not find you.
It was disappointing to me to travel all the way to China and to see the opera and not be able to kiss the STAR . But, it was a wonderful tribute to Lt. Mooney and for our Veterans group. Thank you again for all of your loving, caring effort and I will say in behalf of all of the Veterans, we send to you our deepest appreciation.
Our entire tour was beyond our expectations and we shall never forget the loving, smiling faces of the Chinese people wherever we traveled.

Please tell us how much it cost and we will be more than happy to send you the American money for it. I will put the copy of your song in my scrape book and keep it forever but we want a copy of your group singing it and a video of your group when they are performing. did you try and call me one day? My son thought it was you. If it was I am so sorry that I was not home. Call again or just send me a e-mail sometimes. We loved your music and had a wonderful time in China.
2. Mr. Clyde F. Autio, Maj. General (retired) USAF, president of National Aviation Hall Of Fame with his group is the first Audience from America. They are good and high percipient at music. Gen. Clyde is the first audience who tells about the play to all of his America friends, especial many heroic Flying Tigers and Hump pilots. I real appreciate General’s attention, propagandizing and help the play since ten years.

Dear Liao Qiyu,
It was such a pleasure to receive your message. I have told all of my friends about the very wonderful circumstances that led to our meeting each other. The night of the chorale presentation of your opera was the most extraordinary evening in China. It was during that performance, as I was looking at your very talented and enthusiastic students that I truly saw the importance of how we all shared the same dreams and hopes. That entire performance was done with great professionalism and empathy for the tenderness of the two young people but also told about the devastation that war brings to people. The time with your students after their performance was most precious.
We have been very busy of late. The National Aviation Hall of Fame had its annual series of enshrinement events this past weekend. That involved four days of gatherings from a very casual small airport party for the enshrinees to two formal evening programs and ending with a major aerial demonstration on Sunday. One of the people that was enshrined was retired Air Force Major General John Allison. John was in Kunming as the United States originator for air commando operations to support General Stilwell and General Chennault. He was a triple ace by shooting down over 15 Japanese airplanes. Also, involved in the ceremony was retired Air Force Brigadier General 'Tex" Hill who was one of the original Flying Tigers and also an ace. You may have heard of those two gentlemen.
……There are so many things that I fondly remember about the time I spent in Kunming. Please give my warmest regards to your students and thank them again for being such caring and interested young people. What a great evening that was!!!

All I can say is thank you Qiyu--you are very gracious and Kind to arrange for us to have your music which is so very pretty. I will let you know when I receive it. I have gotten a new, very good, DVD player in order to really hear your music good.
We all enjoyed the concert that night in Kunming and only wish we could have spent more time with you and your choir. You all made us feel so welcome and we thank you for that. We all miss China and hope to be back sometime in the future and maybe have more time to spend with you. Write me again soon.

4. Mrs. Lydia Rossi is Executive Secretary of Flying Tigers Association. Her husband is a well know great heroic AVG fighter ace and record setting 750 times, CNAC “Hump Pilot” flew highest member of “Hump” missions. I’m very honor of they with their delegation group attending our show cantata: Green Path and Rainbow in Sep. 11, 2005. She wrote to me in her very busy time and sent rarity photos with their signs.

Your message was passed on to me and I am so glad to have your address so I can tell you how wonderful your cantata, "Green Path and Rainbow" is and how much we enjoyed the performance last September. I have written up a story of our travels on that trip and have put in information about the cantata. I will copy it here for you and also give you the link to the whole story:
On our last night in Kunming we were given another lavish banquet hosted by the head of the Communist Party in Yunnan. After the banquet we were put on the buses again to attend an opera. This was not the typical Chinese opera.
This was a special Cantata which was written, conducted, and performed in an arts college in Kunming. The opera told the story of the Flying Tigers in Kunming! It was a small theatre, seating perhaps 300 and the story of the Flying Tigers was all sung, mostly by a large choir of 100 singers, with a conductor, pianist, and several vocalists with English titles on a screen on the side of the stage. The first part of the opera dealt with what a pleasant life the simple people of Kunming had prior to the Japanese bombing. It told the story of the farmers, the families, and how simple and easy their life was. When they heard the Japanese were going to bomb them, they didn¹t know what a bomb was and thought perhaps it was like an egg.
"Should we put up an umbrella? or crawl under the table?" They soon found out what a bomb was and what it could do. They sang of the misery, the horrible destruction, and the inability to stop it. Then - along came the Flying Tigers!! Four male singers came on stage wearing pilot uniforms and they sang about coming to Kunming and the fighting against the enemy. Then out came the best singer of the evening - General Chennault! Well, it was crying time again as we all brought out tissues. What a great honor - we could hardly believe it! I found out that this opera had been performed all around the province and on television several times. Words fail me to describe how moved and humbled we all felt.

5. The letter from Jack H. Mooney brother to Lieutenant Mooney
Lieutenant Mooney is real hero of the Flying tigers. He sacrificed his young and worth life for a small city and thousands Chinese people. There is a monument tower in Xiangyun county. Engraved his name.

How wonderful to hear from you with your joyful message and your loving tribute to my brother, lieutenant Robert Henry Mooney. It is a wonderful thing that his final achievement is still remembered so fondly after more than 60 years. We love you for it and thank you warmly for your deeply moving poem and song so admirable performed by you and Chen Yong. I am having copies made for my sister and other members of our family. It is so moving that it brings tears to my eyes with each reading/hearing.

I am so glad to receive your note about the response you received concerning the cantata. We really enjoyed your presentation and consider it an honor to have been the recipient of such a program.
I do not know if you had been informed that during the war my airplane was shot up and I had to jump out of it for the engine was badly damaged and it would not run anymore. Because of that I spent more than 3 months with the people. They saved my life as they made it possible for me to return to my organization. Because of the wonderful treatment and the care that I received I learned more about the people and I have very warm feelings for you and your people.

Dear Liao:
It is so good to hear from you. I have had you on my mind quite
often and wondered how things were moving with you. I am glad to hear of your successful presentation and showing. And to think it was in Kunming.
Do you know that I was stationed in Kunming and that is the field from which I did most of my flying during WWII. Kunming will always have a special place in my heart. But enough about me, I want to hear more about your wonderful performance.
Since I left China we have traveled a bit more. Last year we visited
France. It was a very moving experience to visit Normandy and the large military cemetery with all the grave markers properly aligned in neat rows as they extended across the burial ground. Yes, it reminded me of the time of war in WW II. It also reminded me that my father-law was in Normandy and a very close friend, with whom I went to high school, who also survived that day in June 1944. And it was only 4 days after D DAY that I, in China, parachuted out my airplane and eventually joined up with the 8th Route Army (Ba Lu Gin)

9. China, Burma, India ATC pilot Joe Friday was in China in 1944.He returned home after the victory of the war. But passed away on his 40 year’s birthday from injuries he received during the war. Indeed he devoted his worth life to China. We will remember him for ever. His son Paul Friday came to China many times to look for the places his father fought.

I attended your concert "Green Path and Rainbow" the night of 11 September 2005, along with the Flying Tigers and Hump Pilots and Doolittle Raiders who were there that memorable night.
My name is Paul Friday. My father was a pilot in China in 1944. He died after the war from injuries he received during the war, when I was a young boy. He gave up part of his young life to fight for China. I have waited 50 years for the time when I can again see my father, in a way that parallels Yang Baoqin's wait to again be with Jim Fawkes.
I came up onto the stage after the performance, and was weeping from the beauty of the performance, and was surrounded by warm support from the singers that I will never forget.
Your performance that night of Green Path and Rainbow was, I think, the best performance of any kind that I have ever seen in my life. It paralleled in part my father's life, and my life, and so had very special
meaning for me.
During our tour of China with the American war veterans on the 60th anniversary of the end of the war we took part in many special events, received great honors, and felt the warm love of the Chinese people.
But the greatest experience of this very special trip was your performance of this special musical work.
You deserve great credit for authoring and performing this work. I hope that you can perform it again – and wish that you could tour the U.S. with this performance. That would allow more of the American people to experience the warmth and love of the Chinese people, as have I.I wanted to ask if a video tape was made of your performance? If so, is it possible to obtain a copy of it? I would keep it in my library of the history of my father and of the war in China, and would value it forever.
I will be in Yunnan again next year and hope I can attend any musical performances you might have during that period. I am now your dedicated fan.
Thank you again. You should take great pride in what you have ccomplished with your great work, Green Path and Rainbow. The love that you put into this music fills my heart - and I wish that you, in turn, can feel that love reflected back from me to all of the people involved with this concert.

Mr. Clifford Long is a P-40 Fighter Pilot-Flying Tiger and the former president of America Flying Tigers Association, Flying the P-40 Warhawk fighter with the 23rd Fighter Group’s 25th Fighter Squadron “The Assam Dragons” in the defense of the eastern end of the “Hump Air Route”. His personal role in flying from Yunnanyi and Baoshan and his key role in dive-bombing Japanese fortifications at Tengchong in support of Chinese ground forces during the 1944 Salween River Campaign.:

I must apologize for not getting back to you sooner to express our thanks for the wonderful performance for our Veterans group. We enjoyed it very much.
My only disappointment was not getting to speak to you while I was there at the theater that evening. I do remember seeing you somewhere before the opera but I was being hurried to meet a schedule and needed to rush off. I'm so sorry and I apologize. I did try to get to you at the theater to congratulate you, but when I went on stage after your performance, you had removed your gown and I could not locate you after that because of the crowd and picture taking. I kept looking around but could not find you.
It was disappointing to me to travel all the way to China and to see the opera and not be able to kiss the STAR . But, it was a wonderful tribute to Lt. Mooney and for our Veterans group. Thank you again for all of your loving, caring effort and I will say in behalf of all of the Veterans, we send to you our deepest appreciation.
Our entire tour was beyond our expectations and we shall never forget the loving, smiling faces of the Chinese people wherever we traveled.

Thank you Liao for your message regards the Opera; and to know it is from Kunming!! Yes, I flew the "Hump" Route from India to China during the War. I have since been back to Kunming on several trips, thanks to my great friend Mr. Wong How Man who has an office there with CERs. I stayed at a hotel that overlooked that beautiful Kunming Lake. I took lots of pictures and will remember KMG. Also visited the monument placed on the hill near the Great Kunming Lake. and went up to the large crag mountain that over looks the Kunming area. Yes; Kunming will always be a special place to me. Please wish the People of Kunming a "Very Special Christmas and Wonderful year 2015." I am now 100 years of age and keeping well!!
